size does matter and there’s nothing wrong with taking the “somewhere in between” approach by choosing a dog that’s
neither small nor large. In fact, there are some real jim-dandies out there that are perfectly sized to fit the bill!

Imagine you are cheerfully walking home one day with your newly bought dog. Imagine you meet a passerby, and he points out that you just got an illegal dog breed. Now you are all regrets inside, wishing you had gone to a prestigious shop rather than going to that rundown pet store that has seen better days. So for your future reference, here’s a list of top 20 banned dog breeds in the world.
1. PitBull Terrier
Originating in England, the PitBull Terrier weighs about 20 to 30 kilograms and has a medium height. This dog has a beast-like appearance, with a muscular body and sharp rows of teeth. The Pitbull Terrier was used in blood sports like bull and bear baiting where packs of dogs were set against larger animals in a pit. Many of these sports were made illegal back in 1835. In 1991, the UK government banned both the breeding and ownership of this dog. This was due to the fact that from 1981 until 1991 there were reports of numerous attacks, often unprovoked, on humans by Pitbull Terriers. Pitbulll is banned in many countries like Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Sweden and some parts of usa and Canada.
2. Akita Inu
Akita Inu, as the name suggests, was originally bred in Japan to guard royals and hunt bears. Akita Inus are large and powerful dogs that are known to possess “uncertain” temperaments. They love to go on walks and are affectionate and well behaved, if trained well. However, without the proper training, an Akita Inu can cause immense harm. That is why, it is banned in several regions and countries. Akita Inu is banned in Bermuda Islands and Singapore and have restrictions in Spain, Ireland, USA and Ukraine.
3. Boerboels
Now this is a dog that can definitely bite! Bred in South Africa, the Boerboels is a large mastiff type of dog breed. The breed was originally bred for the purpose of guarding the homestead and working the farm. The Boerboel weighs a staggering 65 to 90 kg and has an average height of 70 cm. Boerboels have latent fighting instincts which makes it very easy to convert them into fighting dogs. Unfortunately, there have been numerous reports of cases where this dog attacked its owner and other animals. It is best to handle and train the Boerboel with caution. Dog breeds has a banned in France, Qatar, Malaysia, Switzerland and Mauritius. Restriction in Tunisia, Denmark, Singapore, Romania And Faroe islands
4. Wolfdog
Ever wanted to own a wolf as a pet? Well, you can’t! But that’s not to say it’s impossible to own a hybrid. The wolfdog is a canine that is produced by the mating of a domestic dog and a wolf. The wolfdog appears similar to a wolf and possesses evolutionary traits similar to a dog. Wolfdogs are more docile but not as aggressive or as dangerous as pure wolves. Wolfdogs need to be trained and handled with caution at all times. Wolfdog is banned in Finland and Norway. It is also restricted in many cities in USA.
18. Neopolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff or Mastino Napoletano is an Italian breed of large dogs. The Neopolitan Mastiff is a descendant of traditional guard dogs of Central Italy. Weighing at a freighting 60 to 80 kg with a height of 60 to 83 cm, this dog can truly seem like a giant. Although many people do not consider Neapolitan Mastiffs to be dangerous creatures, they are illegal in Singapore. In Romania, your Neopolitan Mastif needs to undergo a psychological evaluation before you can keep it as a pet. Neopolitan Mastiff is banned in Bermuda island, malaysia, qatar and singapore.
20. German Shepherd
And last but certainly not least, the German shepherd. German shepherd is a breed of medium to large sized working dogs that originated in Germany. It weighs about 30 to 40 kg and has a height of 60 to 65 cm. On paper these dogs seem amazingly docile; however, German Shepherds are considered a dangerous dog breed. Ukrainian laws forbid owning German shepherds due to their large size and aggressive nature. Similarly, they are banned in Belarus. So that next time you think of buying a German shepherd, make sure you run all the checks. This dangerous dog is banned in Ukraine, Bermuda, Belarus and the Maldives and also restricted in Ireland, UAE, Romania, Malaysia, Singapore, Iceland.
Which is the most dangerous dog? Do you know a dog that needs to be banned in other countries? Let us know in the comments.

SUMMARY
- If you're one of these people and you want your pooch to look after your home, you should probably consider a Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, or German Shepherd.
- If you have a big family full of kids or just welcomed a newborn into this world, it can seem challenging to pick the perfect dog breed. But this is the territory where a Labrador or Golden Retriever would be completely unbeatable!
- Consider getting a Pointer or a Setter since they’re pretty much built for running. If you want something a bit smaller, a Jack Russell Terrier can be a good choice as well.
- If you’re looking for a furry cuddle buddy who will always be happy to laze around on the sofa with you, a French Bulldog or a Maltese is your perfect fit.
- Some breeds deal with being home alone better than others: think about getting a Shar Pei or a Basset Hound.
- If you’re retired and have decided to welcome a dog into your home, a good option for you would be a Boston Terrier, a Pug, or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
- . If the dog is small, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll be happy living in smaller space. Consider getting a Yorkshire Terrier or a Bulldog for a small apartment.
- Retrievers, Collies, and Spaniels are always happy to have company to play with, so they’ll likely make a great match with your other pets. Terriers or breeds typically used in dogfighting can sometimes be a bit complicated.
- Most Terriers can take the heat, and they come in lots of sizes. At the same time, St. Bernards, Samoyeds, and Boxers won't feel good in hot weather.
- Breeds that prefer a colder climate normally have a thick double coat and more body fat. So, as you can probably guess, a good choice is a St. Bernard, Malamute, Husky, or Samoyed.
- German Shepherds aren't a good breed for you due to their dry skin, which results in a lot of dander built-up. The same goes for long-haired breeds as well.
- Getting a dog for the first time ever is both exciting and nerve-racking. There are so many breeds to choose from, and they’re all so cute and adorable! If you’re new to the dog-owning world, then a Labrador, Border Collie, or Poodle will be perfect for you.

A complete guide to picking the perfect dog breed just for you
Guard Dogs
Some dogs have a natural instinct to protect their home and family and they make excellent Guard Dogs. Consider Rottweilers, Boxers, German Sheppards, and Doberman Pinschers. These dogs are natural guardians since they don’t trust strangers easily. Just remember that these breeds need proper training and socialization due to their strength and size.
Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Huskies and Pugs aren’t a good fit though. They are just too playful and friendly.
Family-friendly Dogs
If you have a big family full of children, you want a dog that is friendly, outgoing, and gentle during interactions. They should be highly social and eager-to-please. Of course, all dogs love children, but this is where a Labrador or golden retriever would be unbeatable.
Huskies aren’t a good fit though. If you adopt a Husky, be ready to have another child who is energetic, and demands tons of attention.
And if you like Chihuahuas, you should think twice here. The Chihuahua is attached to one owner and may compete with your kids for care and affections.
Dogs Breeds That Don’t Smell
If you’re looking for a dog breed that scores low in the doggy-odor department, you should consider getting a Bichon Frise, Doberman, Husky, Poodle, Schnauzer, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Dachshund, or Havanese. These dogs’ coats produce less dander and natural oils.
Basset Hound falls into the smelly dog group though. Hounds have coats designed to be weather-resistant, which means they are oily and release doggy odor.
Likewise, Pugs and bulldogs have a wrinkled head can trap food, dirt, drool, and moisture, which can produce unpleasant odor an odiferous. These dogs also tend to be gassy because of their body composition.
Dogs That Don't Shed or hypoallergenic dogs.
If you are looking for a furry friend that won’t coat your sofa, you should consider getting a Poodle, Schnauzer, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier, Maltese, or Bichon Frise.
Most Poodle crossbreeds such as labradoodle, Poochon, or spoodle are also a great choice.
Breeds associated with low-shedding quality are generally those with single-layer coats.
Breeds with double coats on the other hand, like retrievers, German Shepherds, Siberian huskies, or Corgis, have protective dual-layer coats that shed significantly.
Dogs for Apartments
Shih Tzus, Bulldogs, Pugs and Bichon Frise make excellent companion dogs for condominiums or apartments. These dogs adapt well in confined spaces, and a walk in the neighborhood is usually enough exercise to keep them healthy and happy.
Beagles are famously loud barking dogs who don’t do well with neighbors.
Dogs that do well in Cold Climate
These breeds prefer cold climate since they have a thick double coat and more body fat. Your option includes Malamute, Husky, Saint Bernard, or Samoyeds.
Dogs that do well in Hot Climate
Pushed-in face breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, Pomeranians, Boxers are extremely prone to heat stroke due to their narrow airways and nostrils.
Likewise, some long-hair breeds such as Huskies, Shih Tzu or Alaskan Malamute have very thick coats so hot weather is not exactly a suitable environment for them.
Dogs for seniors
Getting a Boston Terrier, Pug, Malties, Bichon Frise, or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the right option for retired people.
Dogs for Multi-Pet Households
If you already have pets at home, you should choose a breed carefully, as you don't want any friction between your pets. Retrievers, Collies, Spaniel, and Poodles won't mind sharing the home with other breeds; they love to have company.
However, Pit Bull Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, Akita Inu and fighting dogs are very competitive in nature.
Dogs for Active Owners
One of the most important pieces of advice you’ll hear is to choose a dog breed that fits your lifestyle.
If you are looking for an athletic and high-energy pooch who you can take them with for morning runs, then you should consider getting a Pointer, Border Collie, or an Australian Shepherd; these dogs are built for running. If you want a smaller companion, consider the Jack Russel Terrier which is also fit for the morning run.
Dogs for first-time owners
If you are starting with dogs, it is safe to begin with a Labrador, Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Shih Tzu, or Poodle. These breeds are friendly, intelligent, and relatively easy to train. They require little socialization and are not stubborn.
Dogs For Busy Owners
If you are a busy owner who won’t be spending much time at home, you may consider getting a Shar Pei or a Basset Hound.
On the other hand, Retrievers and Collies are not a good fit as these types of breeds prefer and require constant socializing.
Lap Dogs for Maximum Snuggle Time
Do you need a cuddle buddy? These types of dogs are comfortable resting on the couch with you when you are relaxing. Your options include French Bulldog, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Havanese, and Shih Tzu.
Dogs are a man’s best friend, but they weren’t always like this. Some descendants of wolves never really got domesticated as well as others. That’s why we ended up with breeds as sweet as the golden retrievers and ones as deadly as the Bully Kutta. Many species are, in fact, banned in countries because of how aggressive they can get. However, these animals are highly moldable, and much of their aggression depends on how they’re trained and cared for. Perhaps one day, we can befriend most canine breeds! Some of these breeds have only been bred for illegal reasons, such as the Tosa Inu, which is why they’re banned. In contrast, others are just a crazy mix of genetics, making them incredibly unpredictable, such as the Wolfdog

German Shepherd
As herding dogs in the past, German Shepherds would guide, herd, and protect livestock. Because of this, German Shepherds may sometimes act a bit distant or aloof. They will love you and your family, but they may give all new people the stink eye. German Shepherds respond extremely well to training.
These dogs need daily exercise.
German Shepherds shed heavily and frequently.
The Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds and there are many good reasons for that. These dogs are loyal, active, family dogs.
Unfortunately though, if you are looking for a dog that will protect your family in the event of a break-in, a Golden is not a good choice.
When it comes to energy levels though, Golden retrievers do need a decent amount of exercise.
Be prepared to groom your Golden often—these pups shed frequently, and heavily.
The Labrador
Labs are wonderful pets for families and children, and they play nicely with other dogs. Labs are so obedient and kind that they often serve as therapy dogs for the sick and the blind.
Remember though that Labs are a large breed and therefore, require plenty of regular, vigorous exercise, in order to stay healthy and fit.
Just like golden retrievers, labs are notorious shedders and have a double coat which needs routine maintenance and grooming.
The Beagle
Beagles are known for their excellent nose and their love to hunt.
One of the advantages to owning a beagle is that they are a smaller dog with a shorter coat. If you are living in an apartment situation where you have a size limit, a beagle will likely fit.
And remember, Beagles are very stubborn and can be difficult to train. Their bark may be quite sharp. Beagles have a much shorter coat which means less shedding.
The Poodle
Poodles, whether standard, miniature, or toy in size, are easily recognized by their distinctive, curly fur. Poodles of all sizes need to be brushed daily, and keeping the coat neat and attractive involves frequent trips to the groomer. If not cared for properly, a Poodle’s fur can become matted and poorly conditioned.
This dog is excellent with children, does everything possible to please its owner, is loving and affectionate, and gets along incredibly well with other animals if introduced while young. Even better, due to their single fur, Poodles shed very little and are, therefore, a good choice for owners who suffer from pet allergies.
The English Bulldog
One of the advantages to owning an English Bulldog is the calm and lazy temperament of the dog. Low exercise requirements allow Bulldogs to be comfortable living in an apartment.
Bulldogs are expensive to purchase and prone to numerous health issues.
Bulldogs shed a moderate amount of hair. They drool often, and tend to be gassy because of their body composition.
These dogs seldom bark, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t noisy. Bulldogs make a symphony of snorts and snores.
The French Bulldog
French bulldogs make excellent pets for city-dwellers, since they rarely bark, are small in size, and require minimal exercise. Frenchies' flat face makes them unable to cool down in hot weather and they need to be protected from heatstroke.
While English bulldogs require 2-3 a week brushing, Frenchies don’t shed much and one brushing per week is enough to keep their coat healthy and free of dead hair.
The Rottweiler
Rottweiler may become very territorial of your home and family, and will instinctively find it challenging to accept the presence of strangers or visitors. This requires significant amounts of training and socialization to resolve.
These pups’ double-coat sheds moderately, and Rottweilers are one of the most expensive dog breeds.
The Siberian Husky
Huskies originated in Northeast Asia where they are bred by the Chukchi people for sled-pulling, guarding, and companionship. As born pack dogs, Siberians enjoy family life and get on well with other dogs;
The breed's stamina, extreme intelligence and independent nature makes them very stubborn.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis
Corgis may not be a good fit for bicyclists though because Corgis’ stumpy legs are too short to keep up with the fast pace of a bicycle.
Corgis are often willing and eager to please, but they have a stubborn streak to them that can sometimes become problematic. These herding dogs require a lot of exercise.
Mutts
These dogs tend to be less expensive and may be less prone to hereditary health conditions. This is because over generations, breeders have perpetuated and magnified genetic flaws in many of the popular purebreds. Pugs, for example, are prone to respiratory problems because of their short nose.
Gail Miller Bisher, best known as the voice of the Westminster Kennel Club, sits down with WIRED to talk about every single dog breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. Gail goes over the seven major groups of dogs (hound, toy, sporting, non-sporting, herding, working, and terrier) and what makes each and every dog breed so special and unique. Ever wondered why Welsh Corgi's are so short or what the difference is between an Australian Shepherd and a Miniature American Shepherd is? Gail Miller Bisher has all of us covered.
